The First-Ever Plug-and-Play Golf Simulator

Garmin has just made history (again!) with its new epic, all-in-one launch monitor and golf simulator: The Approach R50.

And now you can do amazing stuff with it in a complete Carl's Place Studio! Here’s how easy and truly awesome this whole setup is:

  • With the R50, you don’t need to be connected to a PC or mobile device to get data or play simulated golf. All you have to do is push the power button on, and you can be teeing off at the first hole at Pebble Beach—or whatever course you choose from Garmin’s 43K+ library of real-world golf courses!
  • The Garmin R50’s got a built-in 10-inch color touchscreen display, that is fully customizable—and that you can also play Garmin’s vastly improved Home Tee Hero virtual golf on—right on the device!
  • You don’t even need an internet connection to use it as a launch monitor or for Home Tee Hero software. (You will need internet for initial setup, firmware updates, and compatible third-party sim software)
  • To get your virtual golf or your customized launch monitor data on a TV or impact screen, all you have to do is plug the HDMI cable into the TV or projector.
  • When you pair the Approach R50 with a Carl's Place Studio, you can use the HDMI to get virtual golf on your impact screen (along with select data tiles if you want), while you see your impact video and customized data tiles on the R50’s display!

Set up multiple ways to view your shots—no PC, phone, or internet necessary!

Seamless Floor-to-Turf Display

Golf in true-to-life visuals with Carl’s Place DIY Golf Simulator Enclosure Kit’s cabled impact screen, designed to eliminate the bottom border for a seamless transition between your hitting mat and the screen. But is it accurate?

According to our golf reviewer, Marc, who was one of the first to spend some time with the R50,

“I gotta say, I was incredibly impressed with the R50. I put it head-to-head against the Foresight Sports GC3, which I know is dead-on accurate. Across the board, the R50 was right there, within a yard or two, a degree or two, and a hundred-or-so RPMs on all of the data points. Very, very impressive!”

Garmin R50’s Golf Simulation Options — Home Tee Hero & Third-Party Compatibility

Let’s zero in on what you can do simulator-wise with this epic golf launch monitor!

You’ve already learned that you can make it the centerpiece of your home golf simulator setup, or take it anywhere—to the range, a buddy’s, to a net set up in your garage or backyard—and play virtual golf as well.

So, what kind of virtual golf can you get on this thing?

As of right now, you have four fantastic options (it’s possible Garmin will add more options later, like they did with the R10):

  • Home Tee Hero (Garmin’s proprietary sim software)
  • E6
  • GSPro
  • Awesome Golf

It’s important to note that you will need a PC and Wi-Fi connection to play third-party software—i.e., anything not Home Tee Hero. Third-party sim software will also require additional subscription costs.

Exclusively for the R50, Garmin has run its Home Tee Hero software through a technical boot camp, and it has come out the other side with much more realistic graphics and  improved mapping. Translation: it looks far more realistic. This upgrade will not trickle down to the Approach R10. It’s an R50 exclusive! All you need is a Garmin Premium Golf subscription, that is still only $9.99/month or $99.99/year!

Garmin Approach R50 + Carl's Place Studio FAQs

How much is Home Tee Hero?

The improved Home Tee Hero (for R50 only) comes with a Garmin Golf membership. Golfers can compete with each other at over 43,000 virtual courses and participate in a weekly virtual tournament. The membership can be purchased through your profile settings and cost only $9.99/month or $99.99/year—a damn good deal!

Can I play third-party simulation, like GSPro, on the R50?

Yes, however, you will need a PC and whatever subscriptions apply. While connected to a wireless network, you can view all of your recorded shots in detailed, high-definition graphics on your compatible third-party simulator software. Simply select “Connect” on the home screen select the simulator app and follow the instructions.

Can you mirror the Garmin R50 display on an external display?

Yes! You can plug the R50 into a TV or Projector to mirror the display. Once plugged in, simply select “Mirror R50 Display” from the menu.

Can you change the view on the Garmin R50’s display & an external display?

Yes! You can change the view for both the launch monitor's display and a connected external display at any time or change what data appears on the map view. This involves selecting “R50 Display” or “External Display”. NOTE: During a virtual round, you must be connected to an external display to change the view. When connected to an external display, the map view appears on the external display, and you can select another view to appear on the launch monitor display.

Is there a split screen feature with the Garmin Approach R50?

Yes! You can select “Split Screen” for both the R50’s display and an external display, i.e., TV or projector.

Is the Garmin Approach R50 accurate?

Yes! Our in-house golf reviewer was very impressed when he tested it. He put it head-to-head against the Foresight Sports GC3, which is known for its dead-on accurate. Across the board, the R50 was right there, within a yard or two, a degree or two, and a hundred-or-so RPMs on all of the data points.

If I plug into a projector, does the projector control the resolution?

The output on the r50 for the HDMI is 1080p and the projector in the Carl's Place Studio is also 1080p. You could use a 4K projector, but you won’t get a true 4K image (although our projectors have 4K upscaling which makes a 1080p signal a bit better). It is recommended that a user play with all the settings until they get an image they are happy with. Size of the screen and how far the projector is mounted away from the screen are key factors.

How Much Space Do I Need for Garmin Approach R50 + Carl's Place Studio?

When measuring for a golf simulator, make sure you take into account:

  • Buffer space: You don't want your golf simulator right up next to any walls or ceiling. Balls that contact the walls or ceiling can cause damage and have unwanted bounce back.
  • Footprint of the golf enclosure: Make sure to check the actual dimensions of the enclosure footprint. Our C-Series enclosures have built-in buffer space in the rear with the backset rear fitting.
  • Safe golfing distance away from the screen: For the safety of both the golfer and the screen, we recommend standing a minimum distance of 10 to 12 feet away from the screen.
  • Height of the golfer(s)
  • Length of the golf club(s)
  • Turf thickness, heating ducts, and soffits
  • Furniture and access to doorways
