And with the June 2022 release of the the Edge 1040 Series, Garmin has introduced the Edge 1040 Solar bike computer. And with it, you get the whole stack of updates plus a Power Glass solar-charging lens that will extend battery life so you can spend more time riding!

The Garmin Edge 1040 Solar price is a hefty $150 more. But with this Solar cycling GPS, you also get increased storage from 32 GB to 64 GB, preloaded maps for North America, EMEA (Europe/Middle East/Africa), and Australia/New Zealand, and a new metal back mount.

Garmin Edge 1040 Series vs 1030 Plus Size

The 2022 Edge 1040 Series is still the bike computer with the largest display.

With the very slight exception in weight, the Garmin Edge 1040/1040 Solar Cycling GPS units are the same size as the Edge 1030 Plus—providing the most display of all the Garmin Bike computers.

Display Size: All 3 models are 3.5" (88.9 mm) diagonal

Unit Dimension:

  • Edge 1030 Plus: 2.3" x 4.5" x 0.8" (58 x 114 x 19 mm)
  • Edge 1040/1040 Solar: 2.3" x 4.6" x 0.8" (59.3 x 117.6 x 20.0 mm)

Garmin Edge 1040/1040 Solar vs 1030 Plus GPS Accuracy

Garmin's GPS accuracy just continues to get better and better—and the Edge 1040/1040 Solar is no exception!

In fact, in his review, DC Rainmaker said, "I’ll simply say upfront that there’s no bike computer anywhere near the accuracy of the Edge 1040."

Because to the already fantastic GPS accuracy of the 1030 Plus, Garmin added their new multi-band tracking technology.

What does this mean?

You can access multiple global navigation satellite systems, and get access to multiple frequencies sent by navigation satellites for improved accuracy in areas where GNSS signals are reflected, weak or typically don't penetrate—giving you superior accuracy for how far and how fast you’ve run—even in challenging environments!

So that's why ...

Garmin Edge 1030 Plus vs 1040 Series Maps and Navigation

Don't even try to find better navigation and mapping features on any other bike computer on the market; the Garmin Edge 1040/1040 Solar beats them all hands down.

Here's what's new: Addition of “Up Ahead” Waypoint planning/display; Dramatically faster calculation times; Revamped categorization of POI groups (including adding bike shops & water stops); New location search & search history; Power Guide on courses; Included maps for more regions in Solar bundle.

Plus, this ultimate cycling GPS still offers the already awesome benefits of the Edge 1030 Plus:

Ride-Specific Mapping shows key map information on road, gravel, or mountain, based on ride type. Easy-to-interpret bike-friendly routes are more visible, so you can find what you need in a snap.

Off-Course Recalculation lets you pause route guidance and off-course notifications while you go off-course to explore.

Garmin Cycle Map gives you preloaded maps that have wider coverage than ever before, including worldwide MTB trail data from Trailforks. Also get elevation data, points of interest, and searchable addresses.

The Trailforks app allows you to import planned routes directly to the preloaded Trailforks app on Edge 1030 Plus.

ForkSight Mode (in the Trailforks app) automatically displays upcoming forks in the trail and gives you context by showing where you are.

Turn-By-Turn Directions alerts you of upcoming turns.

Back to Start guides you back to where your route started, even if you deviate from it or stop early.

Route Calculation now calculates faster and caches so you can spend more time riding and less time waiting around.

Trendline Popularity Routing uses the billions of miles of ride data that cyclists have uploaded, allowing the Garmin Edge 1030 Plus to find the best route from roads (and trails) most traveled.

Create More Courses in the Garmin Connect app, so you’ll never run out of places to ride. Or plan them on other platforms such as Strava and Komoot then automatically sync them to your Edge.
