What’s so EPIC and ALL-IN-ONE about it?

You don’t need to be connected to a PC or mobile device to get data or play simulated golf on the R50. Let us say it a different way: All you have to do is push the power button on, and you can be teeing off at the first hole at Pebble Beach—or whatever course you choose from Garmin’s 43K+ library of real-world golf courses. You don’t even need an internet connection (you will for your initial setup & firmware updates—but that’s it). 

What’s more, this thing’s got a built-in 10-inch color touchscreen display, that is fully customizable, and that you can also play Garmin’s vastly improved Home Tee Hero virtual golf on—right on the device!

Garmin R50’s Golf Simulation Options — Home Tee Hero & Third-Party Compatibility

You’ve already learned that you can make the R50 the centerpiece of your home golf simulator, or take it anywhere you can swing a club …

So, what kind of virtual golf can you play on this thing?

As of right now, you have four fantastic options (it’s possible Garmin will add more options later, like they did with the R10):

  • Home Tee Hero (Garmin’s proprietary sim software)
  • E6
  • GSPro
  • Awesome Golf

It’s important to note that you will need a PC and Wi-Fi connection to play third-party software—i.e., anything not Home Tee Hero. Third-party sim software will also require additional subscription costs.

Exclusively for the R50, Garmin has run its Home Tee Hero a pretty sweet upgrade with much more realistic graphics and improved mapping. This upgrade will not trickle down to the Approach R10. It’s an R50 exclusive! All you need is a Garmin Premium Golf subscription, that is still only $9.99/month or $99.99/year!

How much is the Garmin R50?

At a premium price of $4,999.99, the all-in-one Garmin R50 launch monitor and golf simulator offers an innovative solution for golfers to practice and play year-round, no matter the weather conditions. As long as you can swing a club, you can get on a course on Home Tee Hero—no additional device needed to connect.

Do you need a Subscription with the Garmin Approach R50?

Yes. The good news: It’s very affordable and you can pay monthly for $9.99 or yearly and save a bit for $99.99. With a Garmin Golf membership, golfers can compete with each other at over 43,000 virtual courses and participate in a weekly virtual tournament. The membership can be purchased through your profile settings.

How much space do I need for a Garmin Approach R50?

The Garmin Approach R50 sits in front of the ball, 1.5 feet away from the hitting area. If using a net or impact screen, you will need 8 feet of space from the ball to the net/screen.

Can I play GSPro and other third-party virtual golf on the R50?

Yes. Currently, you can play: E6, GSPro, and Awesome Golf. However, you will need a PC and whatever subscriptions apply. While connected to a wireless network, you can view all of your recorded shots in detailed, high-definition graphics on your compatible third-party simulator software. Simply select “Connect” on the home screen select the simulator app and follow the instructions.

Do you need the internet to use the Garmin Approach R50 all-in-one launch monitor & simulator?

No, you do not need the internet to use the launch monitor or to play Home Tee Hero. You will need internet during the quick initial setup and to check for and download firmware updates. You will need a PC and a Wi-Fi connection for compatible third-party simulator software.

Does the Garmin Approach R50 have putting?

Yes, the R50 will read puts during Home Tee Hero (so during a round of simulated golf for software that offers that). However, there is not currently a putting practice like with the range practice sessions.

Are any of the metrics on the Garmin R50 calculated or estimated?

No! All of the metrics (ball and club) are measured by the R50’s three high-speed cameras! No special balls needed for spin. However, you will need to use the club stickers (on the top center of each club’s face) to get accurate club data.

How Much Space Do I Need for Garmin Approach R50 & The Net Return Pro Series V2 Golf Simulator Package?

You'll want to take into account the ceiling height of your space not just for the enclosure, but to make sure you have enough room to swing a club! The sizes of the enclosures are below:

  • Home Series V2 Net/Package: 16 (L) X 12' (W) X 8'6 (H)
  • Home Pro V2 Net/Package: 16 (L) X 12' (W) X 8'6 (H)

As for the length & width of your space - the main consideration is around the launch monitor you choose. Some launch monitors sit behind you (like the FlightScope Mevo+ and Garmin Approach R10) and require a certain amount of distance to the screen. Others (like the Bushnell Launch Pro and Foresight Sports GCQuad) sit directly to the side and require a few feet of space width-wise.
