FlightScope i4 Review: I Slept on the Smartest Rangefinder in Golf
After finally putting the FlightScope i4 through real-world testing, Marc found the smartest plays-like distance calculation in golf, personalized club recommendations, and a rangefinder unlike anything else on the market—even if a few quirks keep it from perfection.
I owe this rangefinder an apology.
The FlightScope i4 has been out there for a while now, and I let it sit.
Too many other products, too much other work. And if I’m being honest about it, a bad assumption.
FlightScope is a launch monitor company. So when they rolled out their first rangefinder, I kind of filed it as another SKU, another thing to sell, a way to diversify their brand a bit. I turned my attention instead to the Mevo Gen2, which kept getting better as the price kept getting friendlier. That was the story I was more interested in exploring regularly when it came to FlightScope.
What I got wrong is simple. The i4 gives you the most sophisticated and informed plays-like distance of any rangefinder I’ve used.
The environmental factors it’s weighing are pretty amazing actually. And the wind calculation, while it does have a significant quirk, is the most honest and probably most accurate on the market. I also love the fact that you can get launch monitor-data-informed club recommendations no matter what kind of launch monitor you own. Or even if you don’t even have a launch monitor at all.
But the i4 is really expensive. And it’s not really the best built. And the optics are good if not quite excellent. Plus I found a couple of random annoyances.
Point is, there was a story worth telling all along. I missed it. I own it. And this is my attempt to make it right. Finally, my in-depth, hands-on review of the FlightScope i4, the not-so-new-but-still-very-interesting smart laser rangefinder.
What You’re Getting With the FlightScope i4 and How It Works
Before we get into everything the FlightScope i4 rangefinder does that’s clever, let’s cover what it is and how you actually use it.
Out of the box, with no phone and no app and no setup at all, the i4 is a straightforward laser rangefinder. It ranges from 5 to 1,000 yards, and it’s rated accurate within a yard. I particularly like the double-buzz flaglock confirmation. The rangefinder will buzz when it hits a target. But it will buzz twice when you actually lock onto the flag. Helpful.
It’s fast too. Easily less than a second to get readings. To my eye, it’s pretty much instantaneous.
You’ve got a slope mode that you toggle on the device, so even with no connectivity, you can still get slope-adjusted numbers.
It charges over USB-C, runs somewhere around 500 hours on a charge, and takes about two hours to go from a dead battery to a full charge.
The i4 also has a strong magnet built into the side for sticking to a cart bar. Pretty standard feature in rangefinders nowadays. I don’t think the magnet’s quite as strong as what you get on the Bushnell models, but I never had any issues.
The weather rating is IPX4, which means light rain is no problem.
And magnification is 6x. While I’d really love to have seen 7x in a $500 rangefinder, it’s not the end of the world. I will say that the glass quality is good, but the overall optics, with the black-only readout on the LCD display, are perfectly fine but not necessarily amazing.
Now I gotta say, build-quality-wise, the i4 doesn’t quite feel to me like a $500 rangefinder. I’m going to get into all the brilliant stuff it does. That’s where you’ll see the price justification. But build-wise, it’s coming up a bit light to me. For one thing, it’s kind of small in the hand. Light too. And it just doesn’t feel anywhere near as robust as anything Bushnell puts out. Maybe that’s an unfair comparison standard, and this is FlightScope’s first-ever rangefinder. But just saying.
So that’s the basics of the i4. But of course, you’re buying it to go well beyond basic. So let’s get to the good stuff.
Everything You Can Think of Factored Into This Plays-Like Number
Let’s start with the whole reason you use a golf rangefinder. To get a number that helps you decide what club to play. That’s why we use these things, and the number that the FlightScope i4 gives you is as well-informed as any I’ve encountered on any rangefinder.
Once you pair it with the FlightScope app and then flip into the i4’s FS Mode, you’re getting much, much more than a straight-line distance number.
The i4 gives you a plays-like number built around the exact conditions you’re standing in. Most rangefinders adjust for just slope. Some go a bit deeper by including wind speed and direction. But the i4 is the only one I know of that is factoring in literally everything you could consider.
FlightScope calls it the Environmental Optimizer. It’s chewing through a whole pile of variables to arrive at the number it shows you and then the corresponding club it recommends you hit.
We’re talking air density, temperature, humidity, altitude, kinematic viscosity (basically how thick or thin the air is and how much of it your ball has to push through), and yes, wind speed and direction, which I’ll cover more in a minute. It even references your home location as a baseline, so it knows what normal feels like for your game. And then it adjusts to the exact conditions of wherever you’re traveling.
I’m going to get to the club recommendation part of this whole equation and all of how that works. But just think for a second about how true of a plays-like distance you’re getting. I mean, this is serious stuff. It honestly adds up to the most exacting, specific, best-informed plays-like distance I’ve come across in a rangefinder.
So, right away, you can start to get a feel for who this device is for. If you’re interested in pinpoint information that’s taking everything into account, here you go.
We can also start to see who might be interested in skipping this thing. Why pay up for a $500 rangefinder if you’re cool with something much more simple, like just a slope-adjusted distance?
So, that’s a primer. But it goes even deeper.
The Wind Calculation Is Most Accurate and Most Annoying
I’m afraid you can’t have it both ways.
What I think is the most accurate wind-accounted-for plays-like distance in a golf rangefinder requires you to do some work. Of everything the i4 factors into that sophisticated distance number, wind is the one that works differently than you’d expect.
The wind speed part is automatic. If you’re paired with the app, the i4 pulls the current speed from the nearest weather station and factors it into the calculation.
Now you could make the case that the conditions at the weather station may be different than at the precise spot you’re playing, but this is as far as the technology has gotten to this point. Regardless, there’s nothing for you to do or adjust when it comes to wind speed.
Direction is a different story. Before your shot, you press the mode button to spin a little dial in the viewfinder around to the direction the wind is actually blowing. So that part is completely specific to your exact location. You’re the one deciding which direction to input.
From there, the rangefinder will calculate your plays-like distance. So a headwind is of course playing differently than a tailwind or even a quartering headwind or even a slightly hurting crosswind.
The takeaway here, at least for me, is that this is about as accurate a wind factoring as we’re getting from any rangefinder. And this is the only rangefinder that factors in wind direction this way.
As I mentioned, wind speed is being pulled from a weather station that may or may not be nearby. But with other rangefinders that give you wind data, the wind direction is also potentially flawed. Take the Bushnell Pro X3+. It calibrates its compass and wind direction once at the start of the round and then holds that same orientation for the whole round. But as we know, and especially depending on where you’re playing, the wind often swirls and switches throughout a round of golf.
So the FlightScope i4 takes one of those wind variables, direction, and gives you the full control to make it completely, totally, in-the-moment accurate.
The tradeoff is that this process is a bit more clunky and time-consuming than with other rangefinders where you just push a button and get a number. To select the correct wind direction in the viewfinder takes, in my experience, at least one second and up to three seconds.
That’s not a lot of time. But tell that to a golfer who’s trying to play fast, which is most golfers, and those added-up seconds honestly feel more like you’re adding an hour.
So that’s what I mean when I say the i4 gives you the most accurate wind data but that getting it is also the most annoying.
Again, we can start to see even more clearly who this rangefinder is for and who it’s not for. If you want the most pinpoint information to inform your decisions, this is the sacrifice that’s required. If that sacrifice is too much, well, this is obviously not the correct choice.
The FlightScope i4 Rangefinder Pairs With Any Launch Monitor’s Data
Two things I want to give FlightScope big props for: Not requiring a subscription, ever, and being brand-agnostic even when they had every incentive to try to force you deeper into their own brand.
On that first one, FlightScope is one of the few golf tech companies that, to this point, has resisted the subscription model. And there are a bunch of loyal customers who love them for exactly that reason.
But with this i4 rangefinder, which can actually pull launch monitor data into the rangefinder for personalized club recommendations right in the viewfinder, FlightScope doesn’t force you to use a FlightScope launch monitor.
Foresight Sports and Bushnell, which are sister companies, have similar technology with LINK-Enabled. But you’ve got to use a Foresight or Bushnell launch monitor with a Bushnell rangefinder.
With the i4, yes you can use a FlightScope launch monitor, like the Gen2. And that’s the easiest and most automatic way to get your carry distances transferred to the rangefinder. It all happens through the same app.
But you also have the option to import a CSV file from whatever other launch monitor, and the i4 will then use that data for your club recommendations.
Or, if you don’t even have a launch monitor but know your carry distances, you can input them yourself manually through their Smart Gapping tool in the app. In fact, you only need to input data for one golf club and the FlightScope algorithm will project distances for the rest of your bag.
So the point here is that FlightScope keeps it open-ended. They could have tried to make this a FlightScope-exclusive product where to get club recommendations, you needed data from a FlightScope launch monitor. And they could have charged you a subscription for all of it. They did neither. I’m not saying it was all altruistic. I’m sure they decided that this gave them the best chance of selling the most number of rangefinders. I’m just saying that I think they deserve to sell more rangefinders because of these decisions.
Personalized Club Recommendations Taking Everything Into Account
Once your data is loaded, the i4 puts a club recommendation right at the top of the viewfinder. And as you should have gathered by now, a lot goes into that club recommendation.
A lot of virtual caddies are really just distance lookups. You’re 150 out, here’s your 150 club. Done. The i4’s recommendation is weighing in your personal launch monitor data, the current weather, the wind, including the precise direction you just dialed in, the slope, all at once. So the club it suggests is the club it thinks is right for this exact shot in this exact moment.
And it works really well.
I’m not crazy about the eye ergonomics (not sure if that’s a term) of where the club recommendation is positioned in the viewfinder. It’s at the very top, and I find it difficult to read without adjusting my head position or tilting the rangefinder.
Also, it’s not perfect. For one thing, it’s not factoring lie or position into the equation. So if you’re 300 yards out, in the rough, deep in the trees, it’s probably going to tell you to hit driver even when that shot isn’t realistic.
But it does exactly what it says it’s going to do. You input that wind direction, which admittedly can take a few extra seconds, and the plays-like distance you get back is absolutely phenomenal. Smartest number in golf. Even if you don’t care to pay attention to the specific club recommendation feature, that super-specific plays-like distance is going to help you make the best possible decisions.
I played a round with the i4 when the wind was blowing about 22 or 23 miles per hour, the temperature was about 93, and the humidity was about 45 percent. It was just so awesome to completely remove the guesswork of what those exact variables mean for my golf shots. I just let the i4 do it for me, and when I trusted the number it gave me, it led to better results. Clubbing up and clubbing down wasn’t nearly as much of a mystery.
A Few Small FlightScope i4 Gripes or Drawbacks
None of these are dealbreakers, but there are a few things I found annoying about the FlightScope i4.
I touched on the build quality earlier. The i4 just doesn’t feel quite as premium as it’s priced. It’s small and light and just doesn’t hold up to the Bushnell standard for hand feel.
But probably the thing I liked least about the i4 was the red light that indicates you’re in FS Mode and getting all of that advanced information. It’s like you’re turning a siren on or something. I just think it’s a little ridiculous.
I get that having FS Mode on in a competitive tournament wouldn’t be legal. But I don’t play in those tournaments. For me, I don’t want a bright light on my rangefinder just like unnecessarily calling attention to myself. Plus, golf is a game of honor and integrity. We don’t need a red light to prevent cheating. If a golfer wants to cheat, there are plenty of ways and we don’t have garish signals to prevent them.
Another quibble is that I found the Bluetooth connectivity range to be pretty limited. It’s specced at 30 feet, but I couldn’t get anywhere close to that kind of range. If I got more than several feet away from my phone, I wouldn’t be able to access FS Mode and all the advanced features like the wind direction dial. The good news is that it instantly reconnects once you’re back in range.
So that’s the small stuff. The big one, of course, is the price.
So, Is the FlightScope i4 Rangefinder Worth $500?
At $499, the FlightScope i4 is up there. It’s not the most expensive, but it’s more than a lot of consumers are willing to spend on a rangefinder. And I think that’s the biggest reason this thing hasn’t caught on the way its feature set deserves.
Fair or not, I’m not sure any company other than Bushnell can be successful selling a $500 or more rangefinder. I’m not even sure Bushnell’s been that successful with their top-end, $600 Pro X3+.
I think two things are true. I think that for as smart as the i4 is, it’s worth $500 relative to where everything else is priced. And at the same time, I think it’s too expensive. Meaning, regardless of whether or not I think it’s worth the money, I don’t think enough consumers will think it’s worth the money.
It needs to be a bit cheaper, especially because of the build quality and because FlightScope isn’t a known rangefinder brand.
But make no mistake, it’s damn good. And if you can find it for a hundred or more dollars less than the retail price, I would grab it in a second.
That said, beware of what the wind direction adjustment requires of you. It’s going to take a couple more seconds every time you use it. That is not insignificant, especially to fast players. I really think that’s a factor that needs to be thought through seriously.
But if you want the most informed plays-like distance, the one that’s taking into account the most information and gathering it in the most accurate ways, the FlightScope i4 is that product. I was wrong to have waited this long to get hip to what it's all about.
