Let's Talk Ceiling Height for Your Garage Golf Simulator

Plus Space Requirements for the Best Golf Launch Monitors with Simulation!

***Updated July 2023 to include new Launch Monitors & PlayBetter SimStudio Packages***

Got dreams of putting a golf simulator in your garage, but wondering if you've got the ceiling height to make that dream a reality? In this article we go over everything you will want to consider with regard to ceiling height in a golf simulator setup and more.

The minimum golf simulator ceiling height is 8.5-9 feet, although, depending on your height and your golf swing, 10 feet is a much more comfortable option.

You need to be able to swing fully and freely with no anxiety about hitting the ceiling. Furthermore, you need to consider the space requirements of all your simulator equipment and your golf launch monitor of choice.

Read on to get all the details you'll want to take into consideration when sizing up your space for your home golf simulator setup.

What Is the Ideal Garage Ceiling Height for a Golf Simulator?

In a nutshell, at least 10 feet is the ideal ceiling height in a garage golf simulator. Although, you might get by with 9 feet.

Several factors make a 10-foot ceiling height for your home golf simulator the best choice. First, most launch monitors with simulation require a minimum of 8.5-9 feet. Second, it will depend on your individual height and the height of anyone you might want to play with you in your home golf set up. If you or one of your pals has a high swing, you may be limited.

Another reason is that a lower ceiling could have the effect of causing you to flatten your swing, which would defeat the purpose of practicing to play better at home. It won't do much good to practice and play games on your home simulator if it negatively impacts your golf game. And if you want to be able to go full swing on those power shots with a driver—part of the justification for having a golf simulator at home—you don't want to be limited by your ceiling height. You’ll need the high point of your swing plus 6-12 inches of headroom to make comfortable swings.

Finally, at PlayBetter, we sell complete sim packages for several spaces and the recommended space requirements are as follows:

PlayBetter SimStudio10 Home Golf Simulator Package:

  • 10' Width
  • 8.5' Height
  • 5.3' Deep

PlayBetter SimStudio12 Home Golf Simulator Package:

  • 12' Width
  • 8.5' Height
  • 5.3' Deep

PlayBetter SimStudio13 Home Golf Simulator Package:

  • 13' Width
  • 10' Height
  • 5.3' Deep

PlayBetter SimStudio13 Deep Home Golf Simulator Package:

  • 13' Width
  • 10' Height
  • 10' Deep

As you can see, the minimum space requirement for the 2 smaller enclosures is 8.5 feet, and the large ones are 10 feet. If you do have a smaller space, you can certainly make it work, if you don't think you'll be wary of the ceiling and adjust your swing because of your unease.

Things to Consider for Your Garage Golf Setup

  • How high do you swing? You’ll need the high point of your swing plus 6-12 inches of headroom to make comfortable swings.
  • Think about how high your friends who might be joining you swing as well.
  • What is the minimum ceiling height recommended for your golf launch monitor?
  • The space recommendations for your other simulator equipment, including impact screen, enclosure, and projector with an associated mount.
  • How anxious you are about hitting the ceiling with your backswing, or the possiblity of your swing altering because of a low ceiling.
  • A ceiling that is too tall could pose problems for mounting your projector.
  • The tallest components of your garage golf simulator: your swing, your projector mount, the outer boarder of your golf simulator enclosure.
  • How much room do you need to swing fully inside?
  • The absolute lowest ceiling height for a garage golf simulator is 8.5–9 feet, although most will recommend higher. A 10-foot ceiling height allows a more comfortable experience.
  • If it's in your budget, will it be worth it to raise your garage ceiling?
  • If you have the absolute minimum ceiling height in your garage golf simulator (8.5—9 feet), you could forego using full swinging with your driver and maximize your practice with fairway woods, irons, and wedges.
  • Remember to consider room length and width per your golf launch monitor recommendations. We give you these in the sections below.
  • The mounting position of your projector for you golf simulator will need to be positioned out of the way of your swing, in a place that won’t cast shadows on the screen.
